Our kids are obsessed with Dungeons & Dragons. One day, they looked at me and said, “We wish real life could be like D&D.” And honestly—why shouldn’t it be? Why should everyday tasks and responsibilities feel so monotonous when they could be quests, spells, and adventures?
With five kids, a busy household, and a never-ending list of chores, I was struggling to keep up with making sure laundry was done, schoolwork was finished, and responsibilities weren’t slipping through the cracks. And let’s be real—our second oldest is a master loophole-finder. If there’s a hack around the rules (especially when it comes to video games), she’ll discover it. I’m sure she’ll find another one eventually, but for now, this system feels like the spark we’ve been needing.
🎲 The ScottWarts Academy Grimoire System
We’ve built a homebrew D&D-inspired framework that transforms daily life into an adventure. Here’s how it works:
- Everyday Quests – Chores, schoolwork, and responsibilities become quests to complete.
- XP & Leveling Up – Kids earn XP for completing tasks, showing kindness, and meeting goals. XP unlocks new ranks, privileges, and magical “spell slots.”
- Treasure System – Each day, they earn treasure that can be traded in for real money on payday. This way, they still get that daily dopamine hit while learning about responsibility and reward.
- Proof of Completion – We’re using Google Classroom for them to upload photos or videos of their completed quests. Sometimes they even turn them into tutorials or funny narrations, which makes the whole process more fun.
- Guild Rules – Just like in D&D, there are consequences for chaos and rewards for teamwork.
