“To name a thing is to know its power. To misname it is to curse it.”
⚖️ The Forensic Curse
In forensic science, language isn’t neutral—it’s a weapon. When experts label someone “hysterical,” “noncompliant,” or “unreliable,” they’re not just describing behavior. They’re casting a spell. One that shapes perception, influences juries, and sometimes seals a wrongful conviction.
I’ve studied hundreds of cases where the wrong name—diagnosis, descriptor, or assumption—led to injustice. Junk science thrives on misnaming: bite mark analysis, shaken baby syndrome, even blood spatter interpretation. These aren’t just technical errors. They’re linguistic ones. And they cost lives.
🧠 Neurodivergent Mislabeling
The same curse shows up in classrooms and homes. Neurodivergent kids are called “defiant,” “lazy,” “manipulative.” But what if the meltdown isn’t defiance—it’s sensory overload? What if the silence isn’t rudeness—it’s shutdown?
Language shapes how we respond. Mislabeling leads to punishment. Accurate naming leads to support.
That’s why our family doesn’t use behavior charts. We use spell cards. Emotional literacy boards. Character sheets. Tools that name the real experience—not the surface reaction.
🪄 The Naming Spell
In witchcraft, naming is sacred. We choose magical names, call on deities, and craft spells with intention. Naming is how we claim power, identity, and truth.
When my kids design their character sheets, they name their strengths: “Chaos Strategist,” “Empathy Mage,” “Sensory Seer.” These aren’t just cute titles. They’re declarations. Reclamations. Shields against a world that misnames them.
🔥 Unbinding the System
Whether in courtrooms or classrooms, the power of naming can liberate—or bind. That’s why I teach forensic ethics with the same reverence I bring to spellcraft. Both demand precision. Both require accountability. Both can change lives.
So here’s your invitation:
- Reflect on the names you’ve been given.
- Reclaim the ones that empower you.
- Reject the ones that distort you.
- Rename your systems with magic, truth, and care.
